Until the late twentieth century pants did not make a necessary contribution to the woman's wardrobe. The modern woman whose work load and the type of work has undergone change, will look for comfort and clothing of the least hindrance when performing her chores. Pants were long considered inappropriate clothing for women. Some religions still prohibit women from wearing pants falling back on the Biblical book of Deuteronomy 22:5 where in it is stated that "A woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man".

There are times when women like to go out without a handbag like when they are on a cycling trip or climbing a rock wall. At that time they would like to have all their bits and pieces into a pocket so that their hands are free. The cargo is a type of pockets pant that has many pockets to put all one's paraphernalia in. The pockets pant is ideal for women involved with outdoor activity or just wants her hands to be free to be used to perform tasks.

Women in pants are a regular sight and the fact that they find comfort in the many styles of casual women pants makes a case for pants to be considered as a woman's item of clothing. Casual pants need not be confined to house, work or activity if they are well tailored and of good quality material and worn with attractive top and appropriate footwear they can be worn for a smart casual event
